How do you know if you have amnesia?

It's hard to rember a 200 page word book word by word. It takes me about 30 minutes. Then two weeks later I know what it was about but forgot it word by word. How do you know if you have amnesia?
Most people can not remember 50 words, so you have a good memory.

Amnesia is normally caused by brain damage:

http://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-h鈥?/a>

So, you do not have amnesia, you have a very good memory. How do you know if you have amnesia?
You don't have amnesia, but you don't have perfect memory either. Memory is like a muscle though, the more you exercise it, the more it grows. So if you keep memorizing things, your capabilities will increase. Only a doctor can diagnose amnesia. Poeple with amnesia tend to have "blanks" in their memory. They forget whole packs of time. If you have doubts, or don't remember days all together, you may wanna get checked up, to see if it's amensia or not, and what you can do about it.How do you know if you have amnesia?
if you wake up and can't remember your own name, what day of the week it is, where you live or what you do for a living you have a problem (or one hell of a hang-over!)

if you can't remember some 200 page book 2 weeks after reading it that just means you have a busy life and a poor memory!
I have my doctor's prescription, in which it is clearly written.

If you were a criminal but then you got amnesia would you still be convicted for what you did?

If you, let's say murdered a lot of people and then you were caught but then you got amnesia before you're trial, and you couldn't remember what you did it before, as you had forgotten everything, would you still get convicted for your past crimes?

Because if you have forgotten everything and you are like a diffeferent person then you shouldn't be charged for your crimes. If you were a criminal but then you got amnesia would you still be convicted for what you did?
Just because you don't remember your crimes does not mean that you are not responsible for them. Legal insanity requires that two elements exist. First, you must be incapable of understanding that what you did was wrong. Second, you must be incapable of controlling your actions. Amnesia would not meet this definition. If it did, everybody in court would claim that they don't remember doing it.

Now the court might determine that you are not mentally competent to stand trial, but only if your amnesia created a situation in which you were not able to assist in your own defense and not capable of understanding the charges against you. It would be unlikely that amnesia would fit this definition. Even if it did, you would simply be held indefinitely in an institution until such time as you are deemed fit to stand trial.

Amnesia does not mean that you are a different person. It simply means that you do not remember the person that you are, or don't remember certain incidents that involved you. You are still the same person whether you remember it or not.
That is a very interesting question. The problem is that the victims and the families of the victims did not forget. I think if the criminal has severe neurological problems then he should be in a neurological hospital like Baylor in Texas and volunteer for neurological testing. I have heard of crimes done while sleep walking and there is no memory as the person was sleep walking. This is another aspect of neurology. The person is innocent of the crime.....If you were a criminal but then you got amnesia would you still be convicted for what you did?
Yes you can still be convicted. Lots of accused folk claim that they lack any memory, from amnesia or alcoholic blackouts or just convenience, but the law requires only that the government prove the crime, not memory of the crime. BTW, as a defendant has a right to refuse to testify, how do you suppose the prosecutor could prove (or disprove) the defendant's true state of memory? Finally, loss of memory does not mean loss of character.
Not remembering things has nothing to do with it. If the evidence is enough to convict you it doesn't matter what you know or say or don't know or say.

Obviously you're thinking about whether a criminal could pretend to have lost his/her memory and get away with it. There might be a drastic rise in cases of amnesia if that were the case :-)If you were a criminal but then you got amnesia would you still be convicted for what you did?
If there were sufficient evidence to convict you, then you could stand trial, although you would be unable to give any evidence on your behalf or give very satisfactory answers to the questions put to you. Otherwise it would be all too easy for someone to claim memory loss when arrested and charged with offences.

You start with the premise that the person is guilty of the crimes, so there is no prospect of a return of memory and an appeal against conviction at a later point on the basis of fresh evidence.
Does not matter if the person cant remember what he/she did.

The person had the intent when the person committed the crimes so there was a crime committed by the person and can and will be charged. Amnesia will have no baring on the case

Besides amnesia will usually wear off after some time or treatment
Yes would would still be convicted and would probably be sentenced to a high security unit under s37/41 suppose you got 15years and then your time was spent, you wouldn't be released until your psyciatrist discharged you so your sentence would in effect be indefinate. Not a good thing to feign for an easier time. I worked with loads of youngsters that say they pretended mental illness cos they didn't like prison and found themselves in this situation.
Amnesia is a funny thing, you can get your memory

back if something triggers it, and murders

are a sure way of that happening, its still

at the back of your mind the courts would

send you to a psychiatrist. Proof is also

hard to fake if you were there at the scene.
Yes, you could still be convicted, because what counts is your mental state and culpability leading to, and at the time of, the commission of the crime.
Yes. You would be convicted if you were found fit to stand trial. Amnesia doesn't make you unfit, normally speaking. Also, your mental state AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME is what matters; not your mental state afterwards.
Most definitely you would be convicted of your crimes because they are based on the person you were before the amnesia. A person is held accountable for their acts, whether you remember them or not.
Yes, you are an adult and therefore responsible for your own actions. Too many criminals try to pretend they are crazy in order to dodge the consequences of their behaviour.
Yes as I expect there will be CCTV as Big Brother is always watching and it's all about evidence, evidence, evidence in convicting someone!!!!!
No you'd be sent to a mental institution...And would probs have to stay there all your life...
Yes, because you still did it

What webcomic contains a female goddess, a man with amnesia, and evil angel robot things?

I read this webcomic once in which this female goddess kept accusing this man of rape and all sorts of random stuff, and he's generally like wtf? He ends up waking up and some other chick gives him a name that's not Adam like the goddess says it should be. He goes out to fight these "angels" which look more like giant robosapien things.

I have no idea what it's called, so if anyone has some ideas, please let me know. Thanks! What webcomic contains a female goddess, a man with amnesia, and evil angel robot things?
If you've ever read the book Keeper of the Isis Light and know the story, there was a spin-off of the storyline which made the main character a lizard, the robot (Guardian) seem more stupid and the humans trying to destroy them. The spin-off was called Mange on Isis and was terrible.

I'm not sure if it's the one you are looking for, though. What webcomic contains a female goddess, a man with amnesia, and evil angel robot things?
It might be Neon Genesis Evangelion. I remember there were these weird robot alien things called angels but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.

Are there any pills that are meant to cause amnesia?

  • What does the term "Fugue" used by psychologists mean? in what way it is different from simple amnesia?

A fugue state is a sudden forgetfulness by a person that includes forgetting their identity of anything else about themselves. It is usually a reversible state and cannot be associated with the use of psychogenic substances. It usually involves travel or being lost somewhere. It differs from simple amnesia in the sense that it is always reversible at some point and has not necessarily been usually with any injury or assault to the head and does not necessarily involve any other loss of functioning.

What happens when people get amnesia?

Do they actually think they are someone else like on tv? Or is that fake? What happens when people get amnesia?
The kind of amnesia that usually appears in TV and movies is the rarest kind. It is very, very uncommon for a person to forget who they are.

More commonly, amnesia causes problems with forming new memories, rather than losing old memories. An extreme movie example would be "50 First Dates", where Drew Barrymore's character lives the same day over and over and forgets that Adam Sandler is trying to fall in love with her every night. Once again, a case that extreme is rare, but it does happen. It's usually more mild than that. What happens when people get amnesia?
The "TV amnesia" where you forget your past is VERY rare. What's much more common is diseases or brain injuries that interfere with new memories forming. Most people with amnesia lose a few hours.

Yes, the TV amnesia has happened to a few people. There are a few people who forgot who they were after a car acident. Usually someonefinds them and tells them who they are. The TV amnesia scenerio where they "think they are someone else" requires both extremely rare symptoms, along with them not having a wallet on them (or any friends with them). It is more common for a criminal to claim it happened to them then for it to actually happen

I did hear on NPR a news story about a guy who had a bad reaction to some prescription medications while on vacation, and lost his memory. The local cops though he was a stoner/druggie, made him call to apologize to his parents, etc. What happens when people get amnesia?
They just can't remember things. Or they have a short-term memory and can only remember things from a certain time.
thats not amnesia... they just forget some of their past and have some short term memory

If I try to counter a flashback spell using "Grip of Amnesia," what happens?

From what I know about magic, instant spells go on top of the stack, so "Grip of Amnesia" happens before the flashback spell is casted.

If the opponent chooses to remove his or her graveyard, it removes the flashback spell before he can play it and he mana burns?

If the opponent chooses not to remove his or her graveyard, does the spell get removed from the game because he casted it? Or is it never casted successfully and he just uses up his mana and the card stays in his graveyard? Or does nothing happen at all?

Please explainIf I try to counter a flashback spell using "Grip of Amnesia," what happens?
Technically, the flashback spell would temporarily leave the grave to go on the stack. Thus, if you were to play "Grip of Amnesia", and assuming "Grip of Amnesia" is on top of the stack on top of the flashback'd spell. 1) If your opponent removes his graveyard, his graveyard is removed THEN his flashback spell takes place THEN it is removed as it resolves, and then the rest of the stack... 2) If your opponent does not remove his graveyard, well your "Grip of Amnesia" counters his spell, but his spell has to be removed because that's part of being flashback'd.

For the record, there is no mana burn anymore.

What would it be for the world if everyone had woken up with amnesia ?

everyone would wake up without their stories: what had happened and what is yet to come. what would be the result of this? will we see a chaotic world or dare i say it, a better world in stead? What would it be for the world if everyone had woken up with amnesia ?
I think we would have a new world, perhaps filled with what we have been striving for - peace. No one would know anyone else, there would no longer be hate amongst people. So many people would not be damaged and scarred from the abuse that others inflicted upon them. People would not have trust issues, which tend to keep people out of relationships. I think there could definitely be some benefits if this were to happen.
    You can forget that idea.

A little amnesia humor. Ah, forget it.What would it be for the world if everyone had woken up with amnesia ?
    A total SNAFU!
prolly not because they cannot identify themselves

we are who we are from our experiances

what or who are we without them

lostWhat would it be for the world if everyone had woken up with amnesia ?
The World, rather the differential Societies around the world.

WOULDN'T BE IN, ANY MORE TROUBLE. THEN IT'S IN RIGHT NOW.

In fact, we all may be better off.
Nice little scenario. I don't think it would turn out as a better world.

All the things that are organized now, like people going to work every day, or power plants working 24/7, or shops being open, those will all go down.

Yes, I think there will be chaos. Lots of it. And because of this chaos, people will get confused and probably some will get violent, the "who did this to me"-effect.

If you're interested in amnesia and the effects it would have on your life, watch this video. A man with a 30 sec. memory:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmzU47i2x鈥?/a>
    A good start.

What a glorious world we'd have with no prejudices, preconceptions or bias.
the world would fail and crash.....no workers to run simple things like delivering food, people wouldnt know where to go and no one would be there to help...no doctors-they would need retraining! wow itd be crazy!
For Me Amnesia would be just Perfect.
If you read Kurt Vonnegut's book, Timequake, you will be surprised what the outcome is! And, I'm not telling! The book is just too fascinating (and a quick, easy read!) to reveal what happens.

What are the differences between Dissociative Amnesia and Dissociative Fugue?

What are the differences between Dissociative Amnesia and Dissociative Fugue? What are the differences between Dissociative Amnesia and Dissociative Fugue?
Both are types of dissociative disorders.

In both instances patient has a severe loss of personal memory. Fugue is characterised by the individuals search for a new identity. They tend to leave their home and become somebody else.

In Dissociative Amnesia individuals are not driven to seek a new identity away from home and generally stay put.

They're the main differences as far as I'm aware :)What are the differences between Dissociative Amnesia and Dissociative Fugue?
my textbook says that Dissociative amnesia is when there is loss of memory of one's identity or periods of time in one's life. a Dissociative fugue is when someone loses their memory completely, travels away from home, and assumes a new identity.

Suffering from Amnesia bought on by Alcohol, can you help figure out how this came to pass?

I went out to local Pub, The Brawling Policeman, in my Suffolk village last night. It was the Ladies darts match and the stench of perfume was mixing with my usual tipple of eight pints of Old Speckled Tadger and producing some very odd effects. I remember playing pool with the village witch and losing following a freak mini earthquake. I played a few games of Boule with the village idiot Dave the Duck Whisperer followed by a round of sudden death dominoes with Bent Double Doris who has a thing for me. I won the Dominoes and Doris bought me a drink. I can't remember a thing between drinking the drink and waking up at 5am naked and tied to the goal posts on the village green covered from head to toe in peanut butter except around my danglies. I have asked a few of the regulars at the pub about it but they just give me a knowing smile and say you'll be a fine one for the wicker basket. What is going on?Suffering from Amnesia bought on by Alcohol, can you help figure out how this came to pass?

Peanut butter? How typically British. Virgin olive oil is the way to go, and if you hadn't been four sheets to the wind, you might have put in a request for some. Peanut butter is a sticky wicket, that's probably where the wicker basket reference came from. I'm just bouncing ideas off the wall here. Hope this helps.

    Cos I don't find fault. I find a remedy!!!

All these makes a lot of sense following its logical approach!

If two identical twins developed amnesia, how would others be able to verify who they are?

According to Hume's theory, without psychological continuity, and sharing the same DNA, would they, in fact, be the same person? What makes us "ourselves"?If two identical twins developed amnesia, how would others be able to verify who they are?
WOW! Awesome question! I thought I was the only one who thought of weird stuff like that!:-) I agree, itd almost have to be with fingerprints, or identification from a very close loved one. Assuming, of course, that at least one of them had been fingerprinted in the past-- and of course also assuming that when that was done, the twins hadnt decided to trade places that day..... i digress.

As, for the "what makes us ourselves?" question, in the case of identical, or even siamese twins; as i understand, in many ways they often do 'feel' as though they are they same person. I think that aside from the actual dna and other scientific parts of the equation that the way people feel about something is a big part of what they are/will become. So, does that not make it reality; at least for them?
This is a good question, and seemingly original - thanks.

My child's father is an identical twin and she has NEVER been fooled even as a toddler she knew the difference. Which I thought was amazing!

I think that others close to the twins would be able to help them discover the difference. ---------------------

study published in the March 2008 issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics offers further explanation, even challenging the accepted notion that identical twins have identical genetic profiles. The research found changes in the DNA sequence between identical twins, reflected in Copy Number Variations (when a gene exists in multiple copies.) The researchdid not confirm whether these changes occur during fetal development or as twins age.

The research is significant because many medical conditions can be influenced by copy number variations, such as autism, AIDS, and lupus. If two identical twins developed amnesia, how would others be able to verify who they are?
No. Each of them has a separate body and separate brain. They may be born with the same DNA but as they age (via epigenetics) they become more different. Their fingerprints are different for a quick check of who is who.

If you transfered one person's brain into a clone body *with* psychological continuity, I could concede that was the same person.
Their prints are still different. Hospitals put footprints on birth certificates so the twins don't get mixed up when they're young. If two identical twins developed amnesia, how would others be able to verify who they are?
Fingerprints. And I bet their mother would know the difference.

no i dont think so. but they should be put in sometype of like mental place so it couldnt happen again. but they shouldnt be in like jail, or killed.
yes of course. eye for an eye. murder is murder.

killing is only acceptable when your life or anothers is in immediate danger.

    that is the only exception.

He should be shot without telling him what he is guilty of.
Well if that is the case they would need to have really strong evidence against him.
yep all criminals must be punished.
YES! because he committed the crime either way.
    yes !

Is this a temporary amnesia or something?

i have a bad memory when it comes to faces. awhile ago someone introduced me to two girls and the next day i met them at the campus. i swear i couldnt remember who they were- they tried to explain to tell me they met me just yesterday. after about a week it dawned on me who those girls were. after that they avoided me all together- probably thought i was crazy. this type of thing happens to me every now and then- not too often. what is this? a thing to be worried about?

thanks. Is this a temporary amnesia or something?
Some people are like that. If you're in a situation where people are trying to tell you that they met you the day prior, simply explain to them your problem, they'll understand.

Unless they're douchebags. Which you wouldn't want to be friends with anyway, so you don't have to worry about it.

This can be tough depending on the state laws and if there is a history of violent behavior etc.. On the individual and the severity of the actual crime. It would be also on the proof of intent or malice of forethought etc.. They would also have to prove the medical condition of amnesia and not a drug induced black out. I know that this may not be a full answer, but I would suggest to google to include your area you live in and see what cases come up for cases that apply to your area you reside. From what I had seen, most cases such as the one you are using, turn out to have more of a drug induced scenario and allot of times the suspect had some sort of connection to the victim and it was vary difficult to prove any sort of medical defense. Most folks as a minimum will be charged with 2nd degree. Hope this helps...

When you have amnesia is it possible for a person to get a flipped personality of what it originally was?

Logicly, yes. also dependant on the cause of the amnesia, such as head trauma or other reasons can alter a persons personality as to what it originaly was. Another example is after a person experiences a stroke, it can also affect a personality change.

    The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

    Synopsis:

An ordinary woman discovers that her life was not always ordinary in this action thriller. Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) is a typical, well-mannered single mother working as a schoolteacher when she isn't looking after her children. Nothing on the surface would seem to be remarkable about Samantha's life, but every once in a while she has vague memories and unexplained impulses that don't add up with her current life experience; she has scars but no idea of how they got there, she suddenly displays a deadly talent for knife-throwing while chopping vegetables for dinner, and when she sees a deer, she suddenly attacks it with her bare hands. When an auto accident and a television news broadcast stirs some more uncomfortable memories, Samantha hires private investigator Mitch Hennessey (Samuel L. Jackson) to look into her past and see what he can find. Mitch learns that Samantha isn't really Samantha after all -- her name is Charley and she used to be a professional assassin with a secret government intelligence program...Movie about woman with amnesia who is chopping vegetables and throws a knife.?

Head Injury,Age 4 and Older - Home Treatment

Home treatment for a head injury is only appropriate if there was no loss of consciousness or inability to recall current events (amnesia) after the injury. If either loss of consciousness or amnesia has occurred, return to the Emergencies and Check Your Symptoms sections of this topic to determine when to see your doctor.

    Immediately after a head injury:

    * Check for:

    o Seizure.

o Confusion or not acting normal. Ask the person his or her name, address, age, the date, location, and the name of the president.

o Severe irritability or wanting to fight.

o Inability to remember what happened just before or after the injury.

o Difficulty speaking or slurred speech.

o Dizziness, lightheadedness, or unsteadiness that makes it hard to stand or walk.

o Symptoms that affect one side of the body more than the other side, such as numbness, weakness, or difficulty moving.

o Loss of vision in one or both eyes, changes in the size or shape of the pupils and the reaction to light or abnormal eye movements, such as jerking motions or the eyes not working together.

    o Vomiting.

    o A severe headache.

o Abnormally deep sleep, difficulty waking up, or extreme sleepiness.

    * If there is bleeding, apply firm pressure directly over the wound with a clean cloth or bandage for 15 minutes. See how to stop bleeding. If the cut is deep and may have penetrated the skull, emergency treatment is needed.

    * Check for injuries to other parts of the body, especially if the person has fallen. The alarm of seeing a head injury may cause you to overlook other injuries that need attention.

    * Apply ice or cold packs to reduce the swelling. A "goose egg" lump may appear anyway, but ice will help ease the pain.

    * Be sure to follow any home care instructions from your doctor. If you have questions about the instructions, call your doctor.

This person I know told me that she had a temporary blackout for like 15 minutes. I don't really believe her. She says she was at work and made out with some guy and doesn't remember a thing. Does reincarnation suffer from an amnesia problem in it's intended functioning?

Reincarnation allows us to make up for our sins in the previous lives, right? But how are we supposed to do that if we forget everything about our previous life when we are reborn.

If we do good in this life then we can improve our station in the next life but what about the sins we still carry around with us.How do we make up for them if we can't even remember them, huh?

Or is the slate wiped clean after we are reincarnated so we can start from scratch?Does reincarnation suffer from an amnesia problem in it's intended functioning?
Think of the Reincarnation cycle as one long wide road that the "Physical" Us traverse from the Animal level to Enlightenment with the Soul guiding us. "Lead us not into Temptation" just happens to be those Side roads that lead to Dead Ends. The people walking ahead of us warn us of these, they are the Wise ones who tell us that smoking just isn't worth it, Violence doesn't lead us anywhere, Stuff like that. In every life cycle we meet them and learn. Sin is not heeding this wisdom, we loose valuable time, wander, but there is always someone to pull us back into the Main road. It may take many life cycles to get back but we do, in the end, continue our journey. If you do believe in Reincarnation then you need to flip your vision from that of a physical Human Being who doesn't know what happens before you are born and after you die, to someone who realizes that he may very well be a soul choosing particular lives in order to check out where this road leads, including those dark alleys!
It's a made up idea, so you can make up your own explanations, there is nothing about reincarnation that is based on empirical science.

The more far fetched, the better the explanation.Does reincarnation suffer from an amnesia problem in it's intended functioning?
you will get all the doubts cleared if you meditate under a capable guru who can lead your life. meditate and enjoy by feeling the essence.
people are not reincarnated thats unethical seriously! like yes lets make the human race never ending and let them suffer! i think because new people with new consciences and new views are born that civilization can evolve and not old *recycled* people i know thats mean but thats how i see reincarnation it deprives you of the opportunity to show you matter since you re going to do this all over again anyway so whats the rush! i don't believe that were born into this life to improve our station in our next life then its a never ending circle meaning the human race will never die out which is impossible we will eventually die out!Does reincarnation suffer from an amnesia problem in it's intended functioning?
Of course. I have forgotten everything from my previous life(lives). Even that I lived them.
Reincarnation does not happen to re-teach our human experience to us. It is a soul-lesson. Reincarnation theory explains that since our human existence happens along with our soul, whatever we do in our mortal/human life leaves its impressions or lessons on our soul. It may not even be a matter of "messing" up in this life we know. Ultimately, our soul's journey is not up to us. We are granted life in order to experience it. Physically, we may not remember past experience--although there are those who are in touch with impressions of past lives.

We are on a dual journey, when you think about it. There is the experience we have "here," and the one our soul has everywhere else. It's kind of neat, when you think about it.
If you are truly interested in this then you need to know that Jesus, Himself declared that there was no such thing as reincarnation when he said "Man is appointed once to die and after that the judgement." The Apostle Paul said "To be absent from the body was to be present with the Lord." Live your life now for you won't get another chance.
You're in charge: you need to remember that. You have total and absolute free will (except when it clashes with another person's free will). The core dynamic of reincarnation is free will (yours and those who come in contact with you). That's the only way you can learn -- through the choices you make and experiencing the consequences of those choices.

It's not about "making up for sins." It's about learning, becoming enlightened. Karma can be very difficult at times but it is always positive, if you're open to understanding its lesson. Life is a learning experience in which we teach ourselves through cause and effect and - always - through free will.

"Sin" is a very misleading term to use when the subject is reincarnation. It's a word that relates back to superstitious ideas about being punished (for punishment's sake) by some divinely wrathful being. What you think of as sin is actually ignorance: it's like an empty place within the individual where wisdom should be, but isn't yet. Think of the angry little child who bites his mum when he doesn't get his way, or throws his toy at a playmate when feeling angry. A young child who misbehaves that way doesn't understand the harm he is doing; he will have to learn these things as he matures. In a way we are all children at the soul level, still learning and evolving.

My stepsister (19) has complete amnesia and can't walk or talk again yet. How do i look after her?

She only had her accident a few months ago.My stepsister (19) has complete amnesia and can't walk or talk again yet. How do i look after her?
YOU REALY NEED TO TALK TO MOM AND DAD ABOUT THIS ,THEY SHOULD SEE THE RIGHT TO DO IS GET SOMEONE TO CARE FOR HER FOR THE WEEKEND.My stepsister (19) has complete amnesia and can't walk or talk again yet. How do i look after her?
It is totally inappropriate for you to have care of this poor girl. A female nurse or some other caregiver should be hired for the weekend. My stepsister (19) has complete amnesia and can't walk or talk again yet. How do i look after her?
If what you are saying is true, your parents should be slapped. If it's not true, you really need to find something productive to do.

What would happen if a person had amnesia and could not be identified?

    This is for a story.

If an adult was 'found' with no memory of themselves or who they are and the police were unable to identify them, and no one stepped forward to claim them, would they be 'let go' or would they be commited? This is assuming the they had all thier other faculties and intellegence except for thier indenty. What would happen if a person had amnesia and could not be identified?
They could not commit them. Why would they?....... the person may have lost their memories but they have not lost their capacity to take care of themselves nor have they lost their intelligence. They would probably be given social services to help them get a job and a place to live then be left alone to build a new life. What would happen if a person had amnesia and could not be identified?
They will be identified through DNA tests, medical records and dental records - possibly a similar way to identifying somebody who has died.

They wouldn't be 'let go', no. They'd be cared for by the state/government in a place which is most suitable for their needs.

  • Is it normal for Ambien to cause amnesia?

I have been taking Ambien for quite a while and I've noticed that it gives me amnesia once it hits me. I barely remember talking to people on the phone, and I have no idea what we talked about. It's weird because I vaguely remember talking on the phone, but not to who or what about. Eventually on in the day I remember who I talked to, but I never remember what we talked about.

Is this normal? Is it normal for Ambien to cause amnesia?
Ambien (zolpidem) can cause amnesia. That's why it's recommended that it be taken just prior to going to bed. I personally know of an incident of a patient taking the medication, driving to the grocery store, making purchases, driving home and putting the groceries away and the next day not remembering a thing. In that respect, it can be dangerous for some patients.

Anyways, I had to copy and paste it because, ironically, I have problems with my memory. I wouldn't be able to remember what I just saw on the other web page by the time I got back here to try and type it, or put it in my own words. I am going to make a wild guess though and say I think it **might** be the third one, "Transient global amnesia," but I'm probably wrong.

I also included the URL (below) for you, in case you want to read all of it. There was way too much to put here.

"Anterograde amnesia is the most common. It is characterized by the inability to store, retain, or recall new knowledge after the event that triggers the onset of amnesia. Patients in this state often cannot remember what they ate for their last meal or events from the immediate past. They may fill in gaps in their memory with fabricated events (confabulation). This is the type of amnesia seen in dementia and Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.

Retrograde amnesia is the loss of memories of events that occurred before the onset of amnesia. This is the form of amnesia most people think of when they hear the word amnesia. It often occurs after a head injury.

Transient global amnesia is a temporary loss of all memory, especially the ability to form new memories, with milder loss of past memories, going back several hours. "

    Amnesia.........?

Dissociative Fugue. People literally lose all memory of their life as it has been and begin a totally new life, picking up and moving, starting new careers and developing a new family and network of friends. They don't usually just "wake up" with it, though, and it's usually sparked by trauma.

  • Why is knowledge of brain structures important in amnesia?

I understand that it might be interesting to know that amnesics have damaged hippocampal systems - but what does this actually add to our understanding? Why is knowledge of brain structures important in amnesia?
Neuroscience is important because it adds to our understanding of the brain-behavior relationship. Ultimately, this field can advance our knowledge of how to develop successful interventions for patients with different types of brian damage or other disorders that affect the hippocampus. Why is knowledge of brain structures important in amnesia?
Can't remember...Why is knowledge of brain structures important in amnesia?
Isn't the hippocampus the part of the brain that stores information and memories for a short time before they become permanent and move to the cerebral cortex of the brain to be stored as long term memory. The hippocampus is likely to be damaged or affected when it suffers trauma (for some reason, i can't remember now), so the memories that are in there are lost and/or memories for around the time of the trauma are unable to be stored in the hippocampus, so are never formed. This is often why people cant remember events that occurs right before the trauma or straight after it. Something like that. Is that kind of what you are asking?
To know what and how something is broken is to someday be able to repair it.

    How does amnesia work?

I know it's loss of memory, but what kind of memory, exactly? For example, is it possible that you can't recognize your family members, yet you still know a lot of random information that you knew before, such as major historical events, facts about celebrities, and how to drive a car?How does amnesia work?
Amnesia (from Greek 峒埼嘉轿废兾? is a memory condition in which memory is disturbed. In simple terms it is the loss of memory. The causes of amnesia are organic or functional. Organic causes include damage to the brain, through trauma or disease, or use of certain (generally sedative) drugs. Functional causes are psychological factors, such as defense mechanisms. Hysterical post-traumatic amnesia is an example of this. Amnesia may also be spontaneous, in the case of transient global amnesia. This global type of amnesia is more common in middle-aged to elderly people, particularly males, and usually lasts less than 24 hours.

Another effect of amnesia is the inability to imagine the future. A recent study published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that amnesiacs with damaged hippocampus cannot imagine the future. This is because when a normal human being imagines the future, they use their past experiences to construct a possible scenario. For example, a person who would try to imagine what would happen at a party that would occur in the near future would use their past experience at parties to help construct the event.

    Types and causes of amnesia

Post-traumatic amnesia is generally due to a head injury (e.g. a fall, a knock on the head). Traumatic amnesia is often transient, but may be permanent of either anterograde, retrograde, or mixed type. The extent of the period covered by the amnesia is related to the degree of injury and may give an indication of the prognosis for recovery of other functions. Mild trauma, such as a car accident that results in no more than mild whiplash, might cause the occupant of a car to have no memory of the moments just before the accident due to a brief interruption in the short/long-term memory transfer mechanism. The sufferer may also lose knowledge of who people are, they may remember events, but will not remember faces of them.

Dissociative amnesia results from a psychological cause as opposed to direct damage to the brain caused by head injury, physical trauma or disease, which is known as organic amnesia. Dissociative amnesia can include:

Repressed memory refers to the inability to recall information, usually about stressful or traumatic events in persons' lives, such as a violent attack or rape. The memory is stored in long term memory, but access to it is impaired because of psychological defense mechanisms. Persons retain the capacity to learn new information and there may be some later partial or complete recovery of memory. This contrasts with e.g. anterograde amnesia caused by amnestics such as benzodiazepines or alcohol, where an experience was prevented from being transferred from temporary to permanent memory storage: it will never be recovered, because it was never stored in the first place. Formerly known as "Psychogenic Amnesia"

Dissociative Fugue (formerly Psychogenic Fugue) is also known as fugue state. It is caused by psychological trauma and is usually temporary, unresolved and therefore may return. The Merck Manual defines it as "one or more episodes of amnesia in which the inability to recall some or all of one's past and either the loss of one's identity or the formation of a new identity occur with sudden, unexpected, purposeful travel away from home." While popular in fiction, it is extremely rare.

Posthypnotic amnesia is where events during hypnosis are forgotten, or where past memories are unable to be recalled.

Lacunar amnesia is the loss of memory about one specific event.

Childhood amnesia (also known as infantile amnesia) is the common inability to remember events from one's own childhood. Sigmund Freud attributed this to sexual repression, while others have theorised that this may be due to language development or immature parts of the brain.

Transient global amnesia is a well-described medical and clinical phenomenon. This form of amnesia is distinct in that abnormalities in the hippocampus can sometimes be visualized using a special form of magnetic resonance imaging of the brain known as diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Symptoms typically last for less than a day and there is often no clear precipitating factor nor any other neurological deficits. The cause of this syndrome is not clear, hypotheses include transient reduced blood flow, possible seizure or an atypical type of migraine. Patients are typically amnestic of events more than a few minutes in the past, though immediate recall is usually preserved.

Source amnesia is a memory disorder in which someone can recall certain information, but they do not know where or how they obtained the information.

Memory distrust syndrome is a term invented by the psychologist Gisli Gudjonsson to describe a situation where someone is unable to trust their own memory.

Blackout phenomenon can be caused by excessive short-term alcohol consumption, with the amnesia being of the anterograde type.

Korsakoff's syndrome can result from long-term alcoholismHow does amnesia work?

Just wondering what peoples opinion on the game are before i decide if i wanna get it or notIs amnesia the dark descent a scary game?
It's not like most games, it can be a very intense experience if you block out the real world(turning out the lights and using noise canceling headphones does help). One of the reasons this game actually succeeds to be scary while a lot of other games that try fail is because it keeps you in the dark, it doesn't reveal much to you, ever, you don't usually see the monster that's trying to kill you, and you can't really fight it, you're helpless in a lot of ways, and that element of the unknown is what sets the game apart. I do have to say though, if you are looking for a mainstream "horror" game, like doom 3 or Clive Barkers Jericho, this isn't like that. Personally, I recommend Amnesia. Is amnesia the dark descent a scary game?

Amnesia is partial or total inability to recall past experiences. It may result from traumatic brain injury, degeneration, metabolic disorders, seizure disorders, or psychologic disturbances. Diagnosis is clinical, often including neuropsychologic testing and brain imaging (CT, MRI). Treatment is directed at the cause.

Can a sexual abuser develop amnesia of a sexual event as well as the one who has been abused?

What is the psyche of a sexual abuser? What is their typical personality? Is there one?Can a sexual abuser develop amnesia of a sexual event as well as the one who has been abused?
I seriously doubt it. They will deny the event and could use the ruse of amnesia, but that is highly unlikely. I have worked with several sexual abusers and their victims for more than 10 yrs, and I cannot remember a case where the abuser actually has had amnesia.

As for personality... they tend to have a controling, manipulative personalities, history of abuse (sexual, physical, mental) in their own childhood, with a long list of other types of dysfunctions.

and the psyche of a sexual abuser.... it varies from abuser to abuser.
I'm not a doctor. I'm sure it's possible, but frankly it seems more like a suspiciously convenient way to avoid jail. "I forget" is a very common defense, from Ronald Reagan and the Iran-Contra crime and Alberto Gonzales, et al.Can a sexual abuser develop amnesia of a sexual event as well as the one who has been abused?
I thnk they can. Maybe not true amnesia, they just lock it up in a compartment so they don't have to face what they have done. As far as their psyche or typical personality, who really knows? I think some of them are able to develop a persona that hides their true self from the rest of society their deviate behavior. How many times do you see neighbors of people who got caught saying in an interview "he's such a nice quiet man, I had no idea"?
Sexual abusers , and all criminals in general suffer from a malady known as "selective amnesia" ! They "forget" most , if not all things they`ve ever done wrong , especially when questioned by police , or in the courtroom .

It`s a mysterious "ailment" that seems to afflict ONLY criminals .

As regards the "psyche" and "personality" of sexual abusers , they are sociopaths ............. meaning they believe they`re the centre of the universe and everyone else on Earth is here only to cater to their sick, demented minds . hey also believe that human life is disposable at their whim .

How many of them have been caught , gone to prison , "treated" , released , then gone on to murder young children ?

Contrary to what psychiatrists may say , there`s no curing these vermin . Of course , it`s in their best financial interests to say they are curable .Can a sexual abuser develop amnesia of a sexual event as well as the one who has been abused?
Any abusive person has certain traits. They may have been abused themselves. They can't control other things in life. They are control freaks. They enjoy dominating others. They tend to believe (if it's sexual) that the victim enjoys what they are doing. (Possibly to ease their conscious) Unless they do it so much they can't keep track of it all, I doubt they forget. It's like winning a trophy to them. They may act shy or not. You can't just pick them out of a crowd. They are very deceptive. They can show red flags or hide them very well. They usually have a very low self esteem. They are in all different kinds of income levels. You can research this more on line or in books.
Obviously some will claim to forget to avoid punishment or whatever legal consequenses they are facing. But they may certainly also experience genuine amnesia. If they're messed up enough to be an abuser they may have multiple other mental problems, as well as may experience guilt causing them to deny what they did to the point they actually believe they never did it.

Milk of Amnesia is available over the counter in every drug store. And I've got a bridge...
Heavy, heavy drugs - more than most people can afford. You could do your best with a blunt impact to the head, but unfortunately, that's unreliable, and would probably create lethal internal bleeding and would damage motor skills long before wiping out memory completely.

In general, I'd say it's impossible. Amnesia is fairly rare, and total amnesia almost never occurs. When it does, it's typically to a survivor of a terrible accident, and the victim is lucky to have survived. How can I give myself amnesia?
a few stories that come though my family past says that there is a series of illegal drugs that can wipe a mind clean. few people found wondering the streets lost and one that arrived back home after missing almost 30 years with a note pinned to their shirt saying they were found out in cali like that.

but you would almost have to die to get there and those people were barley functional, they had to be taken care of the rest of their lives which wasn't very long after they were found.

the more safer way of going about such a thing would be hypnosis. but you would have to create a mental break to do so. the mind does it sometimes to protect itself so i know it is possible. the only question is if you can make the mind forget something it doesn't want to?

Since it's only a temporary change, it doesn't alter your actual stats, and they'll still display as the original stat (for example 200) no matter how many times you use it.

When you use it once, your S. Def. is effectively doubled. When you use it again, it rises to three times its original value, and when you use it a third time, your S.Def is effectively 4x what it originally was, though this boost will be lost once you switch out (except when using Baton Pass) or once the battle ends. You can find more in-depth stuff about stats in the source link. How much does amnesia raise Special Defense in Pokemon?
Amnesia increases the user's Special by two stages. Amnesia will do nothing if the user's Special has reached a stage of +6 or a value of 999. The effect of Amnesia is ignored by critical hits.

However, Amnesia will only last until the battle is over.

Hope this helps:DHow much does amnesia raise Special Defense in Pokemon?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

What do you think about if there was a really good love story, but at the end it dealt with amnesia?

I also want to ask, how would you feel about the girl in the story had amnesia and didn't know until at the end of story and everything that went wrong in her and her ex-boyfriend's relationship soon unraveled and everything became crystal clear and things seemed to be doing better for them at the end after they reunited? Would it be a good story, bad story, okay story, or what? i really need your opinions! thank you. What do you think about if there was a really good love story, but at the end it dealt with amnesia?

    Cliche story.

    Reminds me of The Notebook.

What would happen if someone got permanent amnesia and committed a crime beforehand? Still charged?

Let's say someone got permanent amnesia and that this person had committed a random felony before he got it, what is the legality behind this? Is there any precedent? Would he still be charged with the crime despite not knowing anything at all about himself or what he did? What if it was a serious crime like murder or something, would he still be susceptible to the death penalty? What would happen if someone got permanent amnesia and committed a crime beforehand? Still charged?
Yes, he'd be tried and convicted like anyone else. As far as degree, that depends on the circumstances of the crime, not on his condition AFTER the commission of the crime.

There are a lot of people behind bars that have serious medical conditions, including mental ones, has nothing to do with the crime time line. It's all dependent on their actions when it happened.

All their attorney can do is admit it as a factor at sentencing. What would happen if someone got permanent amnesia and committed a crime beforehand? Still charged?
You'd have to prove his amnesia. "I hit my head and don't remember." isn't enough. If he had MRI's, etc. showing the brain damage it might actually be enough to get him an acquittal on a lesser crime. A jury may sympathize.

A murder is different. It's likely that the prosecution wouldn't file unless they had an airtight case. Or until he remembers and can, under law, adequately assist in his own defense. Since there's no statute of limitations on murder, the DA can just wait him out or build his case and charge whenever he's ready. What would happen if someone got permanent amnesia and committed a crime beforehand? Still charged?
If the person has true amnesia and has been proven then no they can not, but there are many out there that have commited a crime and they have learned how to fake it, in short term memory a person will regain memory at one point, but people that have amnesia that have once commited a crime ususual see's a Criminal Psychologist witch will know if the person is truely suffering from it or they are faking it to get out of the crime

to 65 percent of murderers claim amnesia for their crimes

Is there a way to prevent going into dissociation fugue or amnesia? I feel like its happening now?

I've been diagnosed w post-traumatic stress syndrome and I've dissociated three times before, completely didn't know who I was, where I was going and what I was doing. I'm under severe stress right now and I forget where i was and nothing looks familiar. Is there a way to prevent this, I hate this and I'm scared. Is there a way to prevent going into dissociation fugue or amnesia? I feel like its happening now?
Work with a trauma therapist and learn techniques to keep yourself grounded. You can learn to stop yourself and keep yourself together emotionally so you don't drift off. Is there a way to prevent going into dissociation fugue or amnesia? I feel like its happening now?
Try: P.T.S.D. FLASHBACKS PTSD FLASHBACKS: A GROUNDING TECHNIQUE, in sections 33 - 34, at ezy build, below. A previous answer follows: See Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris in sections 33 - 34, and examine the http://1-800-therapist.com/ %26amp; http://www.metanoia.org/choose/ websites, and use the locators in sections 33 - 34, and section 1, and phone book, and/or various associations for psychiatrists and psychologists, to find the nearest one using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy).

If unable to afford it, or to locate one nearby, contact the county/local mental health agency: any therapy on offer may prove helpful, particularly if combined with appropriate medication. (The following is a variant of EMDR therapy, which has been used successfully for those people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, insomnia, and anxiety: it is easily learned, quick to use, yet can be very effective.

It is easy to be dismissive of it, because it may seem a little strange, but is well worth trying, for at least a few weeks, to see how it effective it is in your case). First, sit comfortably, and take a deep breath. Then, without moving your head, move your eyes from the left, to the right, and back again, taking around a second to do so (say: "a thousand and one": this takes approximately a second). Repeat this procedure (without the words, although you can count, subvocally if you like) 20 times. Then close your eyes and relax. Become aware of any tension or discomfort you feel. Then open your eyes, and take another deep breath, and repeat step one, closing your eyes, and relaxing afterwards, in the same manner. Then, repeat the procedure one last time.

Some people may find that this is all they need do: others find that they need 2 sessions in quick succession, but professional treatment is the best option, if you can access it. With practice, you may find that you can employ this technique with your eyes closed, thereby enabling a much wider window of opportunity to use in public, without attracting unwanted attention. If you can't access EMDR, you can request someone you trust to instruct you to focus on the event(s) which caused the PTSD, while you are performing the eye movements, and just before you are due to finish, (they count your eye movements, as your eyes follow their finger, as they move it from left to right; back and forth) and ask you what you are thinking/feeling at that time.

Professional EMDR is always much preferable, and Opester, (who gives it a glowing recommendation) a therapist with more than 20 years experience, and a former contributor, here, stated that it was one of only 2 disorders which can be completely cured.

Is there a way to prevent going into dissociation fugue or amnesia? I feel like its happening now?
I assume you are in therapy to help cope with the stress. That said, one of the things I found can bring on a total state of confusion is the flickering florescent lights in large stores like Wal Mart or building supply stores. Avoid them.

Secondly, if your blood sugar falls too low, that can also stress you. You must eat on a regular basis and avoid all sugar and most starchy carbs like white bread, flour, white rice, potatoes. Eat good protein and some fat like cheese and butter for brain fuel.

When you find yourself in that confused state, stop and try to ground yourself by relaxing. Close your eyes, sit still, take deep breaths and let it pass. Soothing music has a good effect on you, too.

Sometimes just too much stimulus going on at one time can trigger a disassociated state. Loud noise, loud people. . . .

Know that it will always pass. It's a terrible feeling, I know, but I find that I do better by preventing it when I can as opposed to stopping it once it started. (I suffered PTSS also.)

I also learned to use self-hypnosis for relaxation, but simple meditation will be almost as good.

Don't be scared. Just be careful and don't try to make any big decisions or win any important arguments when you feel stressed.

God bless you. I hope this helps. Take care.

  • If a person gets amnesia, How does he remember how to speak a language, or even know how to read or write?

This guy on the news recently says he doesnt know who he is and has no memory of anything, but yet he talks in perfect english. Wouldn't you lose certain vocabulary and even lose any accent you may have? Just curios, because I think hes full of you know what.If a person gets amnesia, How does he remember how to speak a language, or even know how to read or write?
Amnesia can affect different areas of the brain. An amnesiac might not remember what he had for dinner yesteday but can remember how to read. It depends on which part of the brain has been damaged where certain memories are stored. It's the same thing with stroke victims and people with early stages of Altzheimer's.
Different centers of the brain control different actions such as language, motor skills, memory, etc. It all depends on what is causing your amnesia and what will be affected. Sometimes it is caused by a brain injury and other times psychological trauma. Just because someone can remember basic motor functions or language, but not their name does not mean they are faking. They can do scans to see what portions of the brain are functioning and in what manner. If a person gets amnesia, How does he remember how to speak a language, or even know how to read or write?
it all involves parts of the brain
Just Google amnesia, and you will find lots of information on the subject, including the fact that people who suffer from amnesia still remember how to talk.If a person gets amnesia, How does he remember how to speak a language, or even know how to read or write?
    Different parts of the brain.

Is it possible to forget your whole past though amnesia?

    Maybe... I can't remember.

    only kidding..

I think that amnesia is not like clearing an old video, its more choppy, so you could remember all of this bits of that and nothing at all about this.. However being around or in a situation will evoke memory over time.Is it possible to forget your whole past though amnesia?

Have you ever had amnesia? What was it like?

any stories?Have you ever had amnesia? What was it like?
I actually have Retrograde Amnesia, which is where I don't remember old memories but I can create new ones. I am missing around 6 years of memory, including my husband and wedding. I took a really hard fall while my husband was deployed last year so needless to say it was interesting. I wrote an article about my experience to raise awareness.Have you ever had amnesia? What was it like?
    I don't really remember.

Typical questions a psychiatrist might ask someone suffering from amnesia on a consultation?

So as I understand it, someone suffering from amnesia often sees a psychiatrist. What are the standard questions the psychiatrist would ask in such a meeting? I assume stuff about dizziness, headache, etc., but I'm really not sure.Typical questions a psychiatrist might ask someone suffering from amnesia on a consultation?
No- doubtful a psychiatrist would focus on somatic symptoms. Usually they focus on feelings.

    GOOD LUCK.

Does my Brother have amnesia or something worse?

My Brother fell out of bed about 2 hours ago from a nap and hit his head on his dresser. He said he passed out for just a couple of minutes and then woke up. He actually woke up laughing. He seemed fine and communicated just like normal. He went outside and complained of it being extremely bright. That was the only thing and now it is getting a little more worrisome. He asked me when his birthday is, what street we live on, what our Mom's name was. Is he gradually getting amnesia? Should we take him to the hospital?Does my Brother have amnesia or something worse?
I really don't think so. I think he can see you're worried and he's acting to get attention. Though, if he really starts to ask weird things and his speech is affected, then you should go to the hospital. You see, the brain is a very complicated structure and just a tiny bump on the wrong place can cause terrible results. If you can see he looks weird, then consult your parents and get him to the emergency room. Also, tell him that acting won't work and you'll take him to the doctor if he isn't back to normal in a few seconds. You don't say how old he is and age can be a huge factor. If he's under 16, get him to the doctor asap. But, children under 16 also love attention and love to act and cause a scene, so that could also be a issue. You decide. Hope that helps and good luck - I hope he's better soon.Does my Brother have amnesia or something worse?

  • Does the drug versed cause permanent anterograde amnesia?

I had an egd woke up at my house not remembering anyting about the procedure this was a good thing but I have a super memory and im now finding forming new memories or remembering what i did this day kinda fuzzy is this forever?Does the drug versed cause permanent anterograde amnesia?
I don't know what you mean by permanent, but yes. You will not remember any of the events that occur while on versed, and many times will have amnesia for the moments immediately before or after receiving the dose. The amnesia will be permanent, but you'll only lose a sliver of time. As far as I know, there are no long lasting amnesic events.

If one has amnesia and starts to regain their old memories will they remember what happened while amnesiac?

If you have amnesia, will you remember what you were doing after you lost your memories, after you get back your memories from before? If one has amnesia and starts to regain their old memories will they remember what happened while amnesiac?
To put it simply: yes. The memories are still there.

What happens if a Gay person had an amnesia?

Will he still be gay? Will he remember being gay? I mean were there any past cases where a homosexual had an amnesia but still retain their flamboyant gayness? What happens if a Gay person had an amnesia?
    They would still be gay
They themselves will still be gay. Depending on the amount of memories they have lost, it's possible he/she will forget coming to terms and accepting their sexuality and go back into denial. Or their personality might change to back to the point that they can remember, so maybe they'll become less confident about themselves. Of course it all depends on the type of amnesia too. Some people forget absolutely everything about their life so they may be unsure of their identity, but they will still be attracted to the same gender as before. What happens if a Gay person had an amnesia?
He won't remember wanting to be with guys in specific but he'd still like men because it's got nothing to do with memories. And flamboyancy is something people sometimes can't help. It depends - if they rebooted his personality and everything then maybe he wouldn't be flamboyant - but honestly I put that down to being born like it. Some gay guys are naturally flamboyant and others aren't.
Will he still be gay? Yes.

Will he remember being gay? Depends on the extent of the amnesia. There are many different kinds.

Retain their flamboyant gayness? Only if they are flamboyant to begin with. Then maybe. Everybody's personality is to a certain extent formed by their past experiences. What happens if a Gay person had an amnesia?
So what happens when a straight person had amnesia? Will he still be straight? will he remember being straight? I mean were there any past cases where a heterosexual had an amnesia but still retained their ignorant straightness?

Same answer, Yea. Obviously =_=" Sunshine, try harder.
Most likely, yes, they would still be gay, although it would probably take them time to realize it. I think it would depend on how far back the amnesia goes.

Gay people aren't always flamboyant, by the way.
what happens if a fat person has amnesia?

    do they forget to eat?
Since sexual orientation is innate, that shouldn't change. Het people don't suddenly turn gay or lesbian if they have amnesia.

If someone were bisexual..? Who knows.
Amnesia affects memory, not orientation! Of course he would wake up gay! May not know who he is or who he has been with, but he will still like boys!
it would depend on the accident and the type of amnesia. cool question though

What would happen if a criminal got amnesia?

Let's say someone as bad as Osama gets into an accident and gets amnesia. Would they still be punished for a crime they can't remember committing? Or would we try to work with them to see if they will change? What would happen if a criminal got amnesia?
Think about the "door of injustice" you would be opening up! Amnesia is almost totally SUBJECTIVE. You would have all sorts of folks doing horrible things and then saying they 'just didn't remember' it.

If the evidence is present, and on the basis of the evidence they are found 'guilty as charged', then it wouldn't matter whether they remember it or not. The victims of the crimes, and the victims families ALL remember the crimes that were committed, and justice should be served...

We NEED to focus MORE on the VICTIMS of crime, even more than the perpetrators. Currently almost NOTHING is done for the families who have suffered at the hands of these mad men (Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Stalin, Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Pol Pot, and many others...). Millions have died, sadistically, horribly, at the hands of these evil individuals.

I would not CARE whether or not they 'remember' what they were responsible for or not, the fact is that thousands and millions DO remember. Does the fact that they have managed to block it out of their minds (voluntarily or involuntarily) alter the truth of the evidence? What would happen if a criminal got amnesia?
Yes, they will still be charged. Being unable to remember doing the crime(s) does not excuse the fact that you did do the crime(s).

I could only imagine a DUI driver killing an innocent motorist, then coming to in the hospital with a defense of "I blacked out and don't remember anything... thus, I must be declared innocent."What would happen if a criminal got amnesia?
    Can't afford a "miraculous" recovery.

Amnesia is evils most common malady.

What do you think would happen to the world if every one had amnesia?

If tomorrow morning every one woke up with total amnesia.

I mean total, couldn't remember who they were or what they believed in or anything at all. A totaly clean slate! What do you think would happen to the world if every one had amnesia?
I think we would have the potential to create a wonderfull place for everyone
Whoa... lol. That's a very interesting thought. I wonder why people who ask questions here never give their own opinion. I'd say half the world would die from sickness, or madness within the first week. No doctors=no cures=death. No memories=madness=death by suicide. What do you think would happen to the world if every one had amnesia?
    What was the question again?

There would be a world full of confused, scared people.
Great concept!!! The only way it could work though is if everyone on the planet became that way INSTANTLY all in the same moment. What do you think would happen to the world if every one had amnesia?
Since all the laws and moral values left, we would be in complete chaos. We would be the cavemen but with a much bigger population. We would follow our human instinct to get angry and some people would kill. On the bright side we could start the human race over so we have a chance of making it better.

  • What is the difference between PTSD and AMNESIA?

i'm writing a paper, and i need to figure out the difference between post-traumatic stress disorder and amnesia.

can anyone help me out? and provide a source? i would REALLYY APPRECIATE IT :DWhat is the difference between PTSD and AMNESIA?
Amnesia is the inability to recall memories; either retrograde (past) or anterograde (can't learn, basically).

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that is usually created by a very traumatic event in one's life. The hallucinations (auditory, visual, kinestetic) can occur when a stimulus that is tied to their traumatic experience happens. This will cause them to re-live the traumatic experience. In PTSD there is little, if any memory loss. What is the difference between PTSD and AMNESIA?
Hard to know where to start here....

The vast majority of us PTSD folks do not experience literal AH/VH hallucinations or any other psychotic symptoms, and saying that we do perpetuates the prejudice that we must be dangerously mentally ill, about to run out and attack innocent people, etc.... sorry, but this is a big pet peeve of mine.

A good place to start with research is with the DSM-IV-TR, which contains the Dx definition of PTSD. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/ is an amazing resource for free online articles from scholarly medical journals-- just go there and type in "PTSD"; you'll get all the info you could want for your paper and the highest quality references possible, making your teacher very happy. :)

If you had amnesia, what are some things to trigger you into remembering?

I'm and writing a novel so this it totally fictitious. One of my characters has physical amnesia from a bump on the head. What are some things that could trigger him into remembering everything again? When people suffer from that kind of amnesia, what makes them remember? If you had amnesia, what are some things to trigger you into remembering?
Anything that can provide a link to the past memories that are still present, just suppressed. There isn't really anything that we could specifically list here, as it would all differ from person to person. For example, a baseball might help one person remember while an elephant might help another person remember, you never know.

Also, dreams help people remember things, because dreams can involve any of those suppressed memories, due to the fact that dreams often involve suppressed feelings, desires, and remembrances.

In the end, though, amnesia like we have seen on television and in movies is quite rare. In face, it almost never happens, and when it does, it is usually quite short lived. If you had amnesia, what are some things to trigger you into remembering?
in stories the person usually remembers when faced with a situation similar to the one where he lost his memory, in the nick of time to save his friends. If you had amnesia, what are some things to trigger you into remembering?
I've heard the sense of smell is one of the most effective triggers of suppressed memory.

    Also hearing music,or familiar sounds.
Seeing people/places close to them, or objects that were meaningful to them.

  • Is it possible to forget your whole life with amnesia?

...or say you were 17 and forgot everything from the last 15 years.

Would you have the mental age and capacity of a 2 year old and not remember how to anything?

Or would you remember words/what things are called but your life itself is a blank slate? Is it possible to forget your whole life with amnesia?
A number of years ago I was in a car accident, I had a severe head injury, I was in a coma for about 2 weeks, When I came out of it I didn't know who I was, where I was, or why I was, After about 8 months of intense therapy a lot of my memory came back to me, many of my memories in life are long gone, and doesn't look like they'll ever return.

It kind of leaves an empty feeling inside of you.Is it possible to forget your whole life with amnesia?
typically amnesia that comes from a brain injury is only the memory of person information and events.. you would not forget how to speak... unless there was damage to the areas of the brain responsible for speech but that is considered brain damage and not amnesia..... yes it would be possible with a brain injury to forget your whole life but more typical is when there is a trauma like a rape of car accident and people have amnesia of the traumatic event.... maybe a couple for hours. Havign amnesia of many years happens but is fairly rare.

What happens if they find a person with amnesia and can't find out who they are?

All research leads to dead ends. The person can't remember who they are.

Does the person get a name?

Do they get to pick their own name or is one given to them?

How about ID and social security numbers?

How about citizenship? What happens if they find a person with amnesia and can't find out who they are?
If a person has amnesia they will see a therapist/psychologist in order to try and help them retain their memory - if their memories cannot be retrieved then it is likely that the government will issue an identity to this person with the recommendation of a qualified psychotherapist, dependant on where you live different government departments will deal with ID and social security numbers. They would probably have to learn about basic knowledge and the world, they will likely be tested afterwards - this will count towards the citizenship. What happens if they find a person with amnesia and can't find out who they are?
I met a guy hat was like that. They put him in a mental hospital and try to do recall things like regression to see what his dreams said who he was. They gave him a name I forgot what they called him, Bob I think it was.

They tried sodium pentithol and interviewed him and found out he knew a lady named (his mom's name) so they got ahold of her, she told them his name was Jerry and took him out to do what he loved most and he got most of his memory back after that. What happens if they find a person with amnesia and can't find out who they are?
I found a man like that on the street. I was going to take him home. He was wondering around and didn't know what he was doing, but he couldn't tell me where he lived. So, I phoned the police and let them take care of him and the police called a person in charge of the rest homes I think or whatever he does, so let them take care of it.
John Doe or John Smith more likely than John Doe...If he had a concussion or a shock ..a trauma, he will eventually regain part of his memory..it could take 6 months or a year..but he will remember little things that lead up to something..if he is not severely brain damaged and just has lost his memory in a shock or a concussion then he will slowly over weeks get little flickers of memory....I saw a ''Murdoch Mystery's series..Detective Inspector William Murdoch fell from a bridge and he lost his memory..he was pushed and he was lucky he was not run over by a train and that he was not seriously injuried..it's also a book series by author Maureen Jennings..he forgot his name, he can walk and he is able to run and he is from Toronto Canada and finds himself in some bigger town in Great Britian...in England ...he doesn't know what his job is, nor remembers his name, nor where he came from..he meets a young woman Anna who runs a pub in that place...spies and murderers are after him...he is pursued..Anna helps him...she gives him a name she thing she likes, I believe she calls him Henry...or Harry...he has an analytical mind that works still he is a logical thinker so he is not comatose or anything ..his mind works brilliantly...she concludes from his mind that he might be a teacher but he doesn't believe that..then he and Anna are in a dangerous situation and he gets hold of a gun...Anna sees from how he handles that gun that this is not the first time he has had a gun in his hands...so they deduct from that...that he knows how to shoot and how to load a gun and to hit a target.. this is 1896 so before WWI and WWII...he was no soldier in any war..he is in his mid 30's ...eventually he sees some flash of a face of his constable and he sees flashes of cases he had handled then he knows he had been a Police inspector..and he dreams and has nightmares sometimes but he also hears in his dream the woman he loves who is also the forensic expert in his cases, who looks at the murdered people and does autopsies on them and helps that way to solve murder cases and finds out clues how a person was killed...this forensic expert is a woman back in Toronto whom he is in love with ..he remembers her..and in his dream she calls him ''William'' that way...after some time he gets his memory back and he gets an idea what happened to him and that he needs to get back to Toronto..but Anna helps him and she helps solve a case ..that would have lead to the assassination of one of the Queens councelors...Queen Victoria was also Queen of Canada..so she visited Canada and an assassin had a machine gun and it was not to assassin the Queen but one of her most important councelors...Murdoch and Anna help prevent this. He gets a letter of appreciation from the Queen and an offer of over 250 English pounds which he refuses and gives to Anna, who wants to close her pub in England and go to America and start a new life there...that money helps her to accomplish that and William Murdoch gets his full memory back...

If a person is not able to remember their name...I am sure if they are sane and nothing much else wrong with them...they need to report to authorities and doctors will perform more tests..because in most cases their memory will return it's only a question of time...He would probably have his fingerprints taken to see if he has a previous criminal record and other than that get a new idenity temporarily and a temporary ID and social security Id and a visa to be allowed to stay in the country but no citizenship as he might not be a citizen...xxx
