What are the types of amnesia and can memories be regained?

It's for a novel of mine and the character(s) has amnesia. I'd also like to know if it's possible for doctors to know about amnesia through scans or something similar to that.What are the types of amnesia and can memories be regained?
I am not sure of all the kinds but I do know many times it can be re gained.
