What is the best time period for a story about amnesia?

with my story i was thinking my main character should be around witches, warlocks and other magical beings...but i have to fit in amnesia and those two mixed together in such an old time might not be really interesting to readers

Well personally, I would set it in the Victorian era in a mental institute. The Victorians were obsessed with that king of 'black magic'. You could also then do very interesting and wonderful things with somebody waking up, having lost their mind and gradually as they start to get their memory back, they fall into the depths of insanity, and they (and the reader) go through a journey of trying to uncover what is real and what is simply happening inside their heads...
